Barbara Ann Wiese

Events

Barb grew up in Highland Park, MI, the daughter of Dr. Clark and Frances Brian Piper. The Piper family often camped and fished with friends. Barbara would enjoy these activities the rest of her life.
At the University of Michigan, Barb earned degrees in Zoology (BS) and Fisheries (MS). There, she also met Robert Lee Wiese who shared her affinity for the outdoors. They married in 1950 and settled in Ashtabula, OH where Bob worked for Molded Fiber Glass.
To share their passion for the natural world with their children, Barb and Bob bought property in Pierpont, OH in 1961, where the family spent weekends and summers. They built lakes, and with friends, cleared trails, planted 30,000 trees and banded birds. They received distinctions for ODNR Wildlife Conservation and Woodlot Excellence. An advocate for land preservation and civic development, Barb was the first female Supervisor for the OH Soil & Water Conservation, served on the Buckeye Board of Education, Kent College Committee, and Ashtabula Foundation where she was instrumental in the Rails to Trails initiative. She championed for the protection of the N. Kingsville Sand Barrens and its rare species.
After Bob died in 1971, Barb planted U-Pick blueberries. Returning blueberry pickers were a highlight of her summer, in addition to wildflower walks, fossil hunts, seeing her grandchildren enjoy the outdoors and teaching them to fish. And chocolate.
Barb is survived by her: daughters Jo (Tim) Johnson, Ann Arbor, MI and Carol (Dan) Powers, Issaquah, WA; daughter-in-law: Karen (Tom) Wiese, Dallas, TX; 12 grandchildren and 4 great -grandchildren. She is predeceased in death by her parents, husband, brother Tom Piper, and sons: Jay and Tom Wiese.
