Betty's Story

Text size

Betty Louise Robson (née: Maes) passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the Sanctuary of Geneva after a short illness.
Betty was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Matthew and Florence (Hoffman) Maes and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She married Robert D. Robson Feb. 5, 1961.
Betty was a master insurance underwriter and was a past member of the Insurance Women of Buffalo, serving as president of the organization from 1976 to 1977.
Survivors include a sister, Patricia Gemerek; and Betty's children, Gerald Smith, Barbara Moore, Dr. Bruce Robson (Judith), Margaret Gillette (Rupert) and Dr. Gordon Robson (Karin). She also leaves 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Fitzgerald, Doris Schuster and Florence Anastasia.
Betty will be remembered for her easy smile, positive attitude and great sense of humor. Referred to as "Grambo" by many of her grand and great-grandchildren, she also possessed a no nonsense approach to life.
She was a classically trained vocalist singing both with big bands and in church, an excellent cook and an avid reader. She enjoyed orchestra concerts and live theater, and also followed local sports teams. Betty collected may souvenirs from her travels. She loved solving crossword puzzles and usually ended her day with a glass of craft beer, sherry or single malt scotch.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her 'second family' at the Sanctuary, of whom she was very fond, and who took such wonderful care of her during her illness. We would also like to thank Bella Care Hospice for their care and support.
A Memorial Celebration in Betty's honor will be held Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Ashtabula Arts Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bella Care Hospice, 1933 SR 45, Austinburg, Ohio 44010, or the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
