ASHTABULA - Columbus Williams, 91, was called home on Monday, July 31, 2017, with love and prayers from his family.
The son of Lize Wilkins and Pearl Williams, Columbus was born in Hanson, MO on July 7, 1926.
Columbus enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged after five years of service. He was proud of having served his country with honor.
Columbus and his beloved Virginia were married on November 22, 1948 and together they celebrated sixty seven wonderful years together.
Columbus retired from the former Union Carbide Company, now Elkem Metals after forty five years of dedicated service. During his forty five years of dedicated employment, Columbus missed only eight days of work.
Columbus lived life on his own terms and had such a wonderful journey. In his younger years, he played baseball in the American Negro League with Satchel Paige, sparred with Mohammad Ali, and was a Golden Gloves Boxer. Later in his journey, Columbus enjoyed gardening and sharing the bounty with his neighbors and friends, and cooking for his family. He supported his children, grandchildren, and their friends in all of their endeavors.
Columbus will be remembered as a wonderful son, brother, husband, dad, papa and friend.
He is survived by his daughters, Linda D. Smith of Ashtabula, Robin A. Williams of Zephyrhills, FL and Sharon Jackson of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Tasha Robles, Tonia Smith, Harrison Smith, Jamal Williams, Michelle Hunt, David and Tank Jackson; six great-grandchildren, Ja'sean Hatfield, Chiyna Franklin, Dasia Maki, Jayden and Jorden Hatfield, Tiejah, Leneyiah Lawson and Mariana Smith; loving nieces and nephews; and special niece, Harriett Crenshaw.
Columbus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia on April 10, 2016; his son, Henry James Williams; his parents; and siblings, Mary Frances Thomas, Rebecca Gant, Magellan Williams, Ruby Wilson, Lorna Mae Allen, L. C. Wilkins, Willis Wilkins, Frank Wilkins, Willie Wilkins, Robert Wilkins, Ada Wilkins, Lucille Williams and Flora Belle Wilkins.
Homegoing services will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at People's Missionary Baptist Church, 3738 West Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio. Rev. Dr. German Womack, Jr., will officiate. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 5PM until 7PM on Friday, August 4, 2017 at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio.
