Edmund's Story

Edmund Burke, 96, of Ashtabula passed away July 23, 2017 at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
He was born March 26, 1921 in Hamtramck, MI, the son of William J. and Anastasia "Esther" (Pomaszczynska) Burke and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
He attended Austinburg School. He married the love of his life Nellie Wludyga on April 28, 1945 at St. Joseph Calasanctius Church in Jefferson. Ed proudly served his country in the Coast Guard. Sailing on the Great Lakes on several boats for P.S. Co. He graduated from Officers Candidate School "Fort Trumbull" New London, Connecticut as an Esing in the maritime service in 1942.
Ed earned a great reputation as an Electrician while working for Union Dock, retiring in 1984.
A member of St. Joseph's Church, he enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and woodworking.
His survivors include his wife of 72 years, Nellie (Wludyga); two children, Carol (Jim) Young of Florida; Becky (Rick) Hughes of Madison, Ohio; two grandchildren, Linda Garcia and Edmund Young, both of Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Teresk, Gertrude Podemski, Dolores Chmielowiec; two brothers, Harry Burke, Stanley Korn; two nephews, Rick Chmielowiec, Jim Podemski, and his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Monday, July 31, 2017at Our Lady of Peace, St. Joseph's Church, 3312 Lake Ave. Ashtabula. Rev. Fr. Raymond Thomas, will preside. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM at the church.
