Elmer A. Holmes Jr.

October 20, 1948 - November 20, 2018

Elmer A. Holmes Jr. Elmer Adelbert Holmes Jr., 70, of Andover, Ohio, unexpectedly passed away at his home on November 20, 2018. He departed on his final journey just as he did all of those here on Earth--entirely too early. Elmer was born in the town of Vienna, New York, to Evelyn Heller and Elmer Holmes on October 20, 1948. Elmer graduated from Camden High School in the mid 60s. He was always a hard worker who held many jobs that took him all over the U.S.--he visited or worked in all 48 contiguous states before he was 40. In his late twenties, he started what would be his life long career as an ironworker. He retired from Iron Workers Union Local 207 in 2010.
Elmer was as enormous in heart as he was in stature. He loved music, hot rods/fast cars (he was QUITE the driver!), animals of all kinds, gardening, cooking, fishing and most of all his friends and family. Being 6'6" at his tallest he was affectionately known to many as "Big Elmer," and while his large frame commanded respect he was one of the most gentle, helpful and compassionate people one could have ever had the pleasure to know.
Elmer was a very active member of many clubs, including (but not limited to) The Moose, VFW, and The Sportsman's Club. He was a charter member of the The Eagles Club Aerie #4035. Elmer was always the first to lend a helping hand and always saw things through to the end, no matter how difficult they may have been. He contributed to multiple charities such as the Nature Conservancy, the VFW, Saint Labre Indian School, Boys Town, Sierra Club, and Southern Poverty Law Center, just to name a few. He was very politically active and always made a point to cast an INFORMED vote.
Elmer was predeceased by both of his parents (Evelyn and Elmer Holmes); siblings, George Wood, Tom Wood, Ernest Wood, Evelyn Wood; and son, Eric Holmes.
He is survived by sisters, Marsha (Ron) Schlotzhaur, Elizabeth (Leroy) Brockway; children, Kerri Holmes, Kyndra Mae Holmes, Troy Holmes, Buffy Elder, Shannon (Ben) Hammond and Heather (Addison) Warner; grandchildren Evelyn Jayne Gilbert, Davien Clayton Holmes, Tristan Nowak, McKenzie Nowak, Zachary (Kari) Fuller, Ariana Hammond, Jessica Elder, Jamie Hargreaves, and Kayla Wilson; great grandchildren Avelyn Crown and Amelia Crown; many cousins, nieces and nephews; beloved pets George and Wrylie; and MANY friends.
Elmer is LOVED DEARLY, will be remembered fondly, and missed terribly.
Cards can be mailed to 45 Roaming Rock Blvd. Roaming Shores, OH 44085. In lieu of flowers and donations please attend Andover Village Council meetings and DO NOT ALLOW THE ANNEXATION.

I was lucky to know Elmer. Everytime i was with him he would have a great story or insight to share. When he would speak I would listen. We had some good conversations thru the years and he will with no doubt be missed. He was a good old boy and never let anyone or anything change who he was. He was a perfect friend.
