ASHTABULA - Herbert C. Saari, 87, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017.
He was born June 2, 1930 on the family farm in Saybrook to Carl and Dyyne (Carlson) Saari, and was the third of seven children.
He graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1948, and worked at the Star-Beacon, Yoder Brothers Greenhouse, Anderson's Toy Town, Ashtabula General Hospital, where he retired from after 27 years, The Lawson's Store, and Wal-Mart, where he recently received his 20 year pin.
On December 9, 1951, he married Margie Hadlock at the First English Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, where he participated in the choir, was a lay reader, board member and also communion assistant.
The doctor told Marge when they got married that she probably wouldn't be able to have a baby, but together they had five, wow, she sure did prove them wrong.
He loved everyone that he cared for and he frequently visited them during their stay at the hospital to see how they were doing. He got the nick-name, "Motor Mouth", because no one could talk more than him. In 2014, he received the "Senior Citizen of the Year" for Ashtabula County, which he considered a real honor.
On July 14, 1978 when Darla, 21, died in a car accident, and 11 weeks later, Cheryl, 23, and her son Paul, 3, died in a house fire, Herb and Marge were devastated, and did not know how to go on until they were introduced to The Compassionate Friends. Herb dedicated his life to TCF, having served in numerous capacities.
