Hope's Story

Hope R. Merryfield, 88 of Middlefield passed away peacefully Saturday, December 23, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 19, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late William and Willie (Crabtree) Pitman. She graduated from Waller High School in Chicago, IL. Hope worked as the personal secretary to Mr LeRoy Dorsey at the Chicago Portrait Company, until she moved to Middlefield with her husband, and became the Office Manager of Merryfield Electric.

She was an active member of the community, a member of the First United Methodist Church, past President of the East Geauga Friends of the Library and recipient of the Chapman award in 2004, chairman of the Queen selection committees for the Middlefield Swiss Cheese and Geauga County Maple Festivals, and past President of the Nautilletes at the Mentor Lagoons Yacht Club.

Hope loved her family, reading, music and her Scottish Terriers. She was a dedicated piano student and was inspired by Mozart.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Marten E. (Sonny) Merryfield, who she married December 14, 1951, her children, Melinda (William) Becker of Delano, Minnesota, Mark Merryfield of Middlefield, Christy (Tim) Mundy of Logan, Ohio, granddaughter, Brooke (Reggie) Merryfield Rios of Los Angeles, and great granddaughter, Hope Emma Rios. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Ella Wicker, daughter-in-law Cheryl Ann Merryfield, and her niece, Claudia Brisentine.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Russell-Sly Family Funeral Home, 15670 W. High St. Middlefield, OH 44062, from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Middlefield Cemetery. Memorial donation in her name can be sent to the East Geauga Friends of the Library, 16167 E. High St., Middlefield, OH 44062
