James W. Hakkarainen

ASHTABULA - Lifelong Ashtabula resident, James W. Hakkarainen, passed away peacefully July 26, 2017 following a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Ashtabula on Jan. 11, 1943 the son of Victor and Lillian (Niemi) Hakkarainen.

He was a 1961 graduate of Ashtabula High School. He went on to proudly serve his country in the US Air Force for 4 years following graduation. He worked for Rockwell Brake for 21 years and then for 2nd National Bank and Community Care Ambulance Co.

He was a lifelong member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

On Dec. 30, 1966 he married Claudia M. Copeland his loving and devoted wife of 50 years.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife Claudia, his children: Kimberly (Douglas) Bailes of Geneva, Jennifer Coutts of Ashtabula, Jodi (David) Westover of Jefferson and James (Rachel) Hakkarainen Jr. of Toledo; his grandchildren: Ashley (Michael Englehart) and Alyssa Bailes, Rachael and Hannah Coutts, Brooke and David Jr. Westover and Kendra, Malora and James Hakkarainen; and one brother George (Sharon) Hakkarainen and many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Jim's wishes, a private family service will be held in his honor.

The CZUP FUNERAL HOME, 1329 Lake Avenue is handling the arrangements for the family.
