He went to Korea, in the service of his country as an Army Lieutenant from 1953 to 1955, finishing at the rank of Captain. He worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base where he met the love of his life and wife of 59 years, Lois Jean Watkins.

John volunteered in the community, running many elections in the Hidden Lake precinct, and as a committed member of his church since 1964, St. John the Worker of Mission Hills.
His lasting love was his family including, six children and ten grandchildren; Timothy (Claudia) Church, Jeannie Church, Carolyn (Dante) Acosta (sons Rudy and Doran, and daughter Allie), Jeff (Marie) Church (sons Tyler, Kevin, and Garrett), Terri (Alan) Kropp (sons John and Sam) and David (Connie) Church (sons Nathan and Andrew). He always enjoyed his time with family, inspiring and encouraging his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Lois, sons and daughters, and his loving sisters Lucille Pilkington of Ashtabula, and Frances (Wayne) Ward of Honolulu, Hawaii.
He was preceded in heaven by his parents, Frank and Caroline Church; and his grandson Rudy Acosta.
