John Nicholas Marta, 96, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
John is the son of Emilio and Clara (Bisaroe) Marta; he was born on October 7, 1921, in Ashtabula and was a graduate of Ashtabula High School. John remained a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
John was veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army stationed in the China/ Burma /India Theater of Operations. Earning the rank of Corporal, he was discharged in 1946.
John was employed with Sears and Roebuck for twenty eight years prior to his retirement. While working at Sears he met a young lady over a cup of coffee. On June 9, 1971, John and Mary Harr were united in marriage and together they celebrated forty six years of love and friendship. Who would have thought that a chance meeting over a cup of coffee was the beginning of a wonderful journey of love?
John was a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Church. As an active member, John served on the Finance Committee and Catholic Charities Committee. John was devoted to his faith and to his church. He and Mary attended daily Mass.
John was an excellent woodworker and his home is filled with many of his projects. John and Mary enjoyed traveling to Europe, including tours of Portugal visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima; Rome and touring St. Peter's Basilica and the Alpine Tour that included visits to Germany, Switzerland. He and Mary were partners in everything including golf and tennis, as well as walking and biking. The memories that they created will be treasures of the heart.
John is survived by his loving wife, Mary Marta; his sister, Marie Oscar of Wilmington, Delaware; sisters -in- law, Susanne (Ron) Coxon and Catherine Gaynor; and many loving nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Amelia Marta, Evelyn (Charles) Noce, and Lucille (Robert) Bond; sister-in-law, Martha Louise Miller; brother-in-law, Joseph Warren Harr.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1200 East 21st Street, Ashtabula, Ohio. Rev. Raymond Thomas will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Carpenter Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.
Visitation will be held on December 18, 2017, from 9:30AM until 10:00AM time of service at the church.
