Joseph Louis Bodnar Sr

Events

Joseph Louis Bodnar Sr., 81, of New Port Richey, Florida, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019, at his home. He was born June 13, 1937 in New Lyme, Ohio, son of the late Joseph and Anna Bodnar.

Joe grew up on the family owned dairy farm in New Lyme. While on the farm he developed exceptional mechanical skills. If it had an engine on it, Joe could fix it. He graduated from Deming High School in New Lyme, where he excelled in basketball and baseball.

After graduation, Joe proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps., and was honorably discharged in 1956. He spent his early working career as an accomplished Operating Engineer. Before retiring, he enjoyed fishing on Sundays and making his annual fishing trip to Canada with family and close fishing buddy. He eventually retired from the construction trades to own and operate his own lawn maintenance company in Florida.

He was a man of extraordinary spirit who instilled a strong work ethic in his three children. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. After "officially" retiring, he enjoyed watching old westerns, followed all the Cleveland professional sports teams, with his favorite being the Cleveland Indians.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph Bodnar Jr. (Wadsworth, OH), daughters Suzanne Snyder (Tampa, FL), Judie Coe-Wirth (Ocala, FL), sister Louise (Bodnar) Takacs (Westerville, OH), foster siblings Phyllis Fisher (Hickory, NC), Yaro Hospodarsky (Pat) (Mt. Vernon, IL) and Richie Pekar (Windsor, CO).

Loving memories of Papa Joe will be carried on by his four granddaughters Michelle (Tim) Carver, Ashley Coe, Miranda (Sean) Cox and Shelby Snyder along with three great-grandchildren Camryn and Leonidas Carver and Landry Cox.

He was preceded in death by wife Rebecca Ann (Barlan) Bodnar, sisters Rosemary Bodnar and Irene Shukys and numerous foster siblings.

Private burial services and interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Orwell, Ohio. A celebration of Joe's life will be announced at a future date.

Memorial contributions can be made to your local American Legion Post..
