Joseph's Story

Joseph "Joe" Hlivko, 85, of Albion, passed away Friday, April 21, 2017 at St. Vincent Health Center after a short illness. He was born at home in Platea, PA on February 23, 1932, son of the late George and Anna (Tsapik) Hlivko.
Joseph served as a Corporal and Construction Foreman for the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church in Albion. He enjoyed working on cars, drag racing with his son, eating apple pie, being outdoors, gardening and mowing the grass. He always had a green thumb and his favorite rose was the Joseph's Coat Rose. Joe loved to have fun, always joking around and laughing, and he loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kramer.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ann (Nearhoof) Hlivko, or as he always called her, "Molly", whom he married on June 2, 1959; five children, Pamela Ann Bahny and her husband, Stephen, of Albion, Theresa Renee Hlivko of Albion, Mary Ann Thompson and her husband, Scott, of Conneaut, Ohio, Barbara Cristeen Moore and her husband, Douglas, of North Lima, Ohio, and Joseph George Hlivko and his wife, Paula Fetterolf, of Cranesville, Pa.; two sisters, Ann Yazembiak of Albion and Betty Cook of Indiana. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at the MATTERA FUNERAL HOME, 188 East State Street, Albion, Pa., on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Fr. James Kennelley officiating. Burial will be private by the family in Albion Cemetery.
