Juanita A. Horst Clapper, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
She was born on January 27, 1926, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Florence (Lystrom) Hoover. Juanita graduated from Ashtabula High School Class of 1943 and married John "Jack" Horst in 1944 just before he departed to serve in WWII. Juanita married Bryon Clapper in 1995 who preceded her in death in 2013.
Juanita was a stay at home mom until her youngest was in school. She began her career as a cafeteria worker for Buckeye Schools then later served as manager of the cafeteria at Happy Hearts. She and Jack built Kings Roller Rink in 1974 and operated it until selling it in 1990.
They made many friends at the skating rink and provided hours of entertainment for many. Juanita also served a Trustee of North Kingsville. After selling the roller rink, they moved to Florida, where she resided until moving back to Ashtabula in 2015. Juanita loved to socialize and hosted many memorable parties over the years. She traveled extensively, enjoyed knitting and would often be playing cards, especially euchre and pinochle.
Mrs. Clapper was a member of the Garden Church in Summerfield, Florida, and had fond memories of being a part of the Red Hat Ladies in Florida and the B.P.O.Elks Lodges in Ashtabula and Silver Springs, Florida.
She is survived by her children, Tim (Jackie) Horst, Becky Allen, Randy (Lisa) Horst, Phyllis (Paul) Savel and Sara Studio; grandchildren, Ryan and Shannon Horst, Alyssa (Andrew) Huszai, Adam Horst, Dustin (Lindsay) Savel, Kevin (Jamee) Savel, Joseph (Carrie) Savel, Christina (Matthew) Ensminger, Patrick Studio, and Jonathan Studio; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Shirley Best, Carl (Marie) Hoover, Sr., Joyce Hill, and Judy (Dale) Dodd.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, John W. "Jack" Horst; second husband, Byron Clapper; sons-in-law, Robert Allen and Chuck Lago; granddaughter, Heather Martin; and her siblings, Evelyn Kellogg, Eleanor Fagerstrom, Frank Hoover, Jr., Margaret McGraw, Charlotte Burkhardt, Lucille Maille, Helen Hoover, Barbara Hoover, Ralph Hoover and James Hoover.
A memorial service will be held, Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 7:00 PM at Ducro Funeral Services and Crematory, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula, where friends and family will gather from 5PM until time of services at 7PM.
If desired, contributions may be made in Juanita's name to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
