Kathleen's Story

Text size

Kathleen C. Sandella, 63, wife, mother, grandma, sister, niece, and friend, passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, with her family surrounding her in love.
The daughter of Ross and Alma (Osborne) Caudill, Sr., Kathy was born on May 18, 1954, in Ashtabula. On April 28, 1984, Kathy and Tom Sandella were united in marriage. Their thirty-three-year journey through life was one of love, laughter, mutual admiration, and respect for each other.
Kathy was employed with Ashtabula County Veterans Services, and spent most of her working life as a housing and financial literacy counselor. She was endeared to many for her passion and dedication to her clients and their well-being. Before her transition into the nonprofit world, she worked for ten years alongside her lifelong friend Betty Osborne as a bank teller and customer service representative, an experience that was dear to her heart.
Kathy was a nature lover, and could spend hours walking the gardens and trails at the Holden Arboretum. Every day, rain or shine, she enjoyed her 3 mile walk along the shores of Lake Erie. A lover of the arts, she was also a season ticket holder at Playhouse Square, and was inspired by the theatre's energy.
A wonderful cook, gatherings at her home were filled with good things to eat, especially her wedding soup and pasta dishes. But more important than the food on the table were the friendships she nurtured. She enjoyed meeting with the "Mommies Group," a collection of friends whose children were classmates at Saints John & Paul. They routinely got together to catch up, break bread, and share memories.
Kathy will be remembered for her faith in God and her fellow man, her strength, and grace. As a Nana, she gave "squishy" hugs to her grandbabies. One of her biggest regrets with her cancer diagnosis was that she wouldn't be around to participate in their lives, but she also knew that their other Nana, Pat Sova, will give them extra love and care.
Kathy was an intuitive person, knowing when those around her needed her gentle touch. She was patient and loved children, her own and others. She was an eternal optimist, always believing, hoping, and encouraging others to do the same. Most importantly, she placed others before herself and led a life of service to all.
Kathy is survived by her best friend and husband, Tom Sandella; her much adored children, Amanda (J.J.) Hopson of Tampa, Florida, SaraJoy Pugliese of Charleston, South Carolina, Ashley (Steven) Sova of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and T.J. Sandella of Cleveland, Ohio; her precious grandchildren, Maddy DeGeorge, Morgan Hopson, Mitchell Hopson, Aria Sova, and Nico Sova; siblings, Charlene (Dalton) Dixon, Ross Caudill, Jr., and Mickey Caudill all of Ashtabula; aunt, Pat (Mario) Cellitti; loving nieces and nephews; and her many friends.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Alma Caudill, Sr.; mother-in-law, Esther Sandella; and her sister-in-law, Glenis Caudill.
Calling hours will be observed from 2:00PM until 4:00PM on Sunday, November 26, 2017, and a Memorial Service will follow at 4:00PM. Both calling hours and the memorial service will take place at the Zaback-Williams-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.
If desired, memorials in Kathy's name may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio, 44004.
