Larry Sonstein, 72, of Geneva, passed away unexpectedly, Friday July 21, 2017.
He was born September 4, 1944 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Jack and Liberty (Klein) Sonstein.
An Army Brat, Larry spent his high school years at Staunton Military Academy and graduated from Virginia Military Institute where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1966. He retired as a Major in 1975.
Larry served on active duty for nine years in the US Army with the Field Artillery and Adjutant General Corps including two tours in Pleiku, Viet Nam, plus V Corps in Frankfurt, Germany. A member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 900 and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, plus membership with the American Legion Post 0124.
Larry enjoyed many years of community service to include serving on Jefferson Village Council and Geneva City Council, a member of the Jefferson Jaycees he served as a District 1-D and Region 1 Director. Larry was a 28 year member of the Ashtabula Elks Lodge 208 where he served as a Trustee, Officer, and Past Exalted Ruler. He also served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Ohio Elks. Larry was made a life member of the Elks organization.
Mr. Sonstein is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret "Peggie" (Douglass) Sonstein; two sons, Michael Robert (Jodi Peterson) Sonstein and Mark Douglass (Sharon Hajek) Sonstein; plus five grandchildren, Michelle Renee, Michael Joseph, Benjamin David, Andrew Thomas, and Cassandra Ann; and brother, Jeffrey Sonstein (Batya Billinkoff).
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Larry's Life will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2017 from 6-8PM at the Ashtabula Elk's Lodge #208, 3115 Lake Rd. W., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004. An Elk's Service along with military honors provided by the American Legion Post #103 will begin at 7:15 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Elk's National Foundation, 2750 N. Lakeview Ave., Chicago, IL 60614-2256
DUCRO FUNERAL SERVICES AND CREMATORY, 4524 Elm Ave., Ashtabula is assisting the family.
