Michael's Story

Michael Dana Smith, 60, passed away August 3, 2017, at Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
The son of Lewis and Fran (Domenico) Smith, Sr., Michael was born on July 3, 1957, in Ashtabula.
Michael was a thirty-year employee in the College of Education for the University of Central Florida, serving as an Assistant to the Dean of Music, he worked directly with and for Graduate Students. His enthusiasm for his vocation made him a much admired employee of UCF. He was president of the employee's union, AFSCME Local #3345. Michael had a passion for fairness in the workplace and he cared for those union members and their families.
Michael was a Sci-Fi and Fantasy aficionado; he followed Dr. Who and enjoyed Star Trek and Harry Potter. He watched Days of Our Lives for 40 years and was Freddie Smith's #1 Fan. He was a devoted Cleveland sports fan, giving extra encouragement to the Browns always waiting for "next year". Michael was born with a servant's heart and was generous with his time and talents. His spirit of friendship and caring always brought light to those who needed to know they were not alone.
Michael will be remembered as a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend. He was devoted to his nieces and nephews, giving them support and encouragement.
Michael is survived by his beloved mother, Fran Smith of Ashtabula; siblings, Lewis Smith, Jr., Fred (ReneƩ) Smith, Traci (Doug) Warren, all of Ashtabula, Jenny (Chris) Hughes of Columbus; fourteen nieces and nephews, Lewis (Shannon) Smith, III, Bryan (Nicole) Smith, Nicholas Warren, Justin (Elizabeth) Warren, Freddie Smith, Ave Warren Amy Hughes, Aaron Warren, Alec Warren, Noah Hughes, Doug Warren, Jr., Marianna Hughes, Patrick Hughes, and Jacob Perts.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph's Church, 3312 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio. Rev. David Bridling will preside. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, West 19th Street, Ashtabula, Ohio.
Calling hours will be observed from 5PM-7PM on Tuesday, August, 8, 2017, at Zaback-Williams-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.
If desired, contributions in Michael's name may be made Austinburg Activity Fund, 2026 State Route, 45, Austinburg, Ohio, 44010.
Michael's family would like to thank the staff of Austinburg Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the excellent care Michael received. The genuine love and care shown to Michael and his family as he finished his life journey will always be close to our hearts.
