Richard Leroy Whelpley, 82, passed away unexpectedly November 9, 2017, in Yadkinville, NC. He was born June 16, 1935, in Ashtabula, to Harold and Mildred Whelpley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Lokeel Mabe Whelpley; daughters, Rhonda (William) Brown and Stephanie Whelpley; grandchildren, Morgan Brown, and Cheyenne and Shawnee Winters; stepchildren, Gail (Don) Lemming, Ricky Hinshaw, Dean (Susan) Blalak, Karen (Mark) Sanford; step grandchildren, Ricky Hinshaw, Jr., Michael Hinshaw, Dean Blalock, Jr., Chris Blalock, Mark Sanford, Jr., Matthew Sanford; two great-grandchildren, Darren Hedrick and Anthony HIggins; Richard is also survived by a sister, Janet (Ralph) Volk, Kingsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard graduated from Ashtabula High School where he excelled in football. He attended Ohio State University and, in 1956, he served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. When he returned from the Army he worked at the Conneaut Dock Company, Reliance Electric Company, and the Ashtabula Gas Company. He loved farming on his place in Sheffield Township, canoeing and riding his motorcycle, before he moved to Yadkinville where he raised over 800 chinchillas, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, ducks and turkeys. Dick and Lokeel enjoyed feeding wild turkeys and deer that would come into their yard. Dick was a great story teller and would do anything to help his family and friends.
Dick, Lee Robishaw and Bob Dunne were instrumental in the formation of Boy Scout Troop 11 at The Kingsville Presbyterian Church in the 1960's, which is still very active today.
