Roger's Story

Roger Louis Bottorf, Sr., age 74, passed away Monday July 10, 2017 at the Pine Grove Nursing Home in Geneva, surrounded by his loving family. Born November 11, 1942 in Plymouth Township, Ohio, the son of Fred and Naomi (Olin) Bottorf, he was a lifelong area resident.

He worked for the ATC company in Geneva for over 30 years. After graduating from Navy training school, he served six years on the USS Shangri-La. He enjoyed riding horses, motorcycles, and searching with his metal detector for remnants of the Great Ashtabula Train Wreck in the Gulf area. He was a known blacksmith and wood and stone carver.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Margaret Bottorf, Haila Payne, Dorothea Durst, and Brynn Hall; daughter, Bernadetta Bottorf; and his wife, Bernadette Claudia (Caruso) Bottorf, the love of his life whom he married January 12, 1971.

He is survived by his son, Roger "Sonny" L. (Marqu├ętte James) Bottorf, Jr. of Ashtabula; daughter, Tina Markin of Ashtabula; brother, Barrie Bottorf; sister, Holly (Richard) Watson; grandchildren, Kaila, Mariah, Bradley, Andrea, Leo, and LaVander; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 21, at St. Joseph Cemetery chapel, West 19th Street. Potti Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, OH is handling arrangements. www.pottifuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashtabula Covered Bridge Museum.
