Ronald James Champlin, 71, of Saybrook died unexpectedly Saturday, August 19, 2017. He was born in Conneaut, Ohio, September 17, 1945, to James and Evelyn (Stewart) Champlin. A 1963 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he received a bachelor of science in civil engineering from Indiana Institute of Technology in 1967. He was a licensed structural engineer in both Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Ron married his wife, Linda (Forinash), in 1970. They recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary. They have four children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Ron was an honorable, caring, and hardworking man that placed his family above all.
Ron worked for CT Consultants for 41 years. Prior to that, he worked for CEI, Penn DOT, and Commonwealth. He also taught statics and concrete design at Lakeland Community College in the 1980s. Ron loved his work as a structural engineer and enjoyed showing his family interesting projects he was working on. He also made sure his children and grandchildren knew the difference between concrete and cement.
In his free time, Ron enjoyed gardening and planted a large vegetable garden every year. He was an avid reader and had an uncanny ability to recall information read long ago. In his younger years, Ron enjoyed camping, fishing, scuba diving, and wood working. Most of all, Ron enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and looked forward to hearing what each one had to say.
Ron was preceded in death by his brother, Lynn Champlin in 1991, and granddaughter, Gabrielle Collins in 2004.
He is survived by his wife; his parents; children Lisa (Michael) Simmons, Julie (George) Collins, Robin (Sanj) Moghe, and Mark (Heather) Champlin; grandchildren Jessica (Josh) Webster, Ryan, Meghan, and Alissa Simmons; Jacob, Zachary, and Seth Collins; Nathan, Kady, Alaina, Avrie, and Lexie Champlin; and great-grandchildren Matthew, Savannah, and Lucas Webster and Leia Platt.
