William "Bill" John Greer, 84, of Conneaut, died peacefully of natural causes at his home surrounded by his family on September 24, 2017. He was born May 8, 1933, in Akron, the son of Nathan Andrew Greer and Ruby Grace (Bennett) Greer.
Bill served briefly in the Army in Washington, DC, and retired from R.M.I. in 1991. He was a member of the Conneaut Area Historical Society, the Amboy Rifle Club, and American Legion Cowle Post #151. When his children were young, he served as a Cub Scout Leader.
Bill was a hard-working family man. A talented mechanic and home-builder, Bill could fix anything. He was highly skilled at repairing and re-building old tractors and also enjoyed driving them, especially his favorite International Harvester. His closest family members will always remember his smile as he plowed the fields under the summer sun. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife Janet (Stack) whom he married August 18, 1956; his son David (Cynthia) Greer of Conneaut; his daughter Linda Mayes (fiancé Tom Rapose) of Conneaut; two grandsons, Nathan (currently serving with the Army in Afghanistan) and his wife Tamara Greer, and Andrew Greer (currently serving with USAID in Tanzania); and two great grandchildren Kailyn and Gunner Mayes in Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nathan and Ruby Greer, his brother Richard, and his grandson Chad Mayes.
In accordance with Bill's wishes, the family will have a celebration of his life when his grandchildren return from their assignments overseas. The Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center has charge of arrangements.
