David's Story

The Rev. David A. Laakso, age 62, of Harborcreek, Pa., passed away peacefully, at his home, on Saturday, May 6, 2017, following an extended illness. He was born in Conneaut, Ohio, on Dec. 8, 1954, a son of the late Arne H. and Ruth M. (Kitinoja) Laakso.
David was a graduate of Westminster College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He was an ordained minister of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Over the last 13 years, David was Pastor of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harborcreek. Previously, he had served as chaplain at Bethesda Children's Home in Meadville. He had also previously served as Pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Erie, Trinity Lutheran Church in Westminster, Md., Zion Lutheran Church in Johnstown, Pa. and had served his internship at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bloomsburg, Pa.
David had served on the board of directors of Perseus House in Erie and was a former member of the Lions Club of Meadville. He loved genealogical research, writing and reading. David was proud of his Finnish heritage and was blessed to visit family in Finland over the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Arne Laakso.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 23 years, Rebecca R. (Wolfe) Laakso; three children, Melinda K. Muzi (Erich) of Canton, Ohio, Peter D. Laakso (Katie) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Philip A. Laakso (Julia) of Canton; two step-sons, Andrew Peden (Erica) of Gerry, N.Y., and Alex Peden (Angel) of Sinclairville, N.Y.; one sister, Shirley Brookhouser (Gerald) of Erie, Pa.; one brother, Eric Laakso (Luanne) of Conneaut, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Shirley Wolfe of Erie; and he was "Paappa" to his five grandchildren. David is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law.
Family and friends may call at the Dusckas-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 5151 Buffalo Rd., on Tuesday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harborcreek. The Rev. Roy P. Washill will officiate. The Rev. David A. Laakso will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
