Frederick Joseph Monda, 82, of Conneaut, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, May 11, 2017, at the David Simpson Hospice House.
Fred was born on Sept. 5, 1934, in Saybrook Township, to Pat E. and Mary M. (Guglielmo) Monda.
He attended St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church and the First Congregational United Church of Christ. Fred graduated from Conneaut High School Class of 1953, where he lettered in football as a running back and received a football scholarship to play at the University of Cincinnati, where he earned the nickname, "Locomotive." Fred retired in 1996, after 42½ years with Norfolk Southern Railroad, where he worked in the clerk's office.
Fred was proficient in awareness of local, homeland, and world news and served on the Conneaut City Council.
Fred practiced carpentry for years, creating many original furniture pieces, and home projects for his family. He loved daily journaling most of his life. His family loved his poems and letters. He was famous for conversations, and humor for any occasion. Fred was totally devoted to "Being There" for his wife, family, friends or whomever he spent time with. He loved to cook for others providing the best dishes and desserts. His family adored him, and he adored them all equally. He was very brave, and stayed strong throughout the days of his illness.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Lillian Monda, whom he married on May 25, 1991, in Elyria; children, Pat (Jeff) Janis, Fred Monda, Kelly Prescott and Cathy Norris; step-children, Rob (Doreen) Boyer, Doug (Donna) Boyer and Maryl Boyer; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Donnie Monda; sisters, Rose Marie (Wallace) Gentile and Louise (Donald) Anderson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held, Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 4 p.m., at the First Congregation UCC, 211 Buffalo St., Conneaut, with Rev. Stephen Szilagyi and Pastor Joyce Shellhammer, officiating. A dinner will be served following the service in the dining room. He will be Inurned at St. Joseph Cemetery in a private family service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Fred may be given to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Euclid, Ohio, 44119.
