Leslie P. Swanson, age 93, a former Westwood Dr. resident, died Thursday morning, March 9, 2017, at Saybrook Landing.
He was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Ashtabula, the son of Charles and Anna (Nordgren) Swanson, and had been a resident here all of his life. Mr. Swanson was a Harbor High School graduate, a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army serving in the European Theatre. He worked as a contractor, building custom homes and specialized remodeling. He owned and operated Leslie Swanson Builders. He was married to Agnes E. Adamson on June 14, 1947, in Ashtabula.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served many terms on church council and property committee. He and Agnes wintered many years in Scottsdale, Ariz. with daughter Carolyn and her family. Mr. Swanson's greatest devotion was to his family and nothing made him prouder than being an American and his Swedish heritage. He loved wildlife, bird watching, was a member of the Audubon Society and the Sam Wharram Nature Club.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes; three daughters, Sharon L. (Bill) Shinskey and Marilyn R. (Jim) Onion, both of Ashtabula, and Carolyn A. (Mark) Linderman of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two granddaughters, Katelyn Linderman and Kimberly (Tyler) Crist, both in Scottsdale.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Eleanor Bjerstedt, Mildred Wood and Evelyn Wallace; and two brothers, Herman and Wilmer Swanson.
The family would like to extend a grateful appreciation to the Saybrook Landing staff for the exceptional care they have given to both their father and mother as residents there.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 4 p.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, 504 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. James Brandis officiating. American Legion Post #103 will offer military honors following the memorial service.
