Madeline Frances Grippe Bernardo, age 94, of Center Road, Saybrook Township, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Country Club Retirement Center.
She was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Angeline (Vocca) Grippe and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.
A 1941 graduate of Ashtabula High School, she married the love of her life, Peter Annunciato Robert Bernardo on Sept. 13, 1942, just before he was deployed for World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps. They later completed their vows with a wedding Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on Oct. 9, 1945.
A lifelong member of Our Lady of Peace Parish (Mt. Carmel Church and later St. Joseph Church), she enjoyed writing poetry and had received a first place state/national award for her poem "The Do-Do Bird". Madeline was blessed with an angelic singing voice and had a radio program with her sister on which they sang regularly. She had also written her own play which was performed at Columbus Junior High School.
Her survivors include her three children, Peter R. (Joanne) Bernardo Jr. of Beachwood, Lois (Amico) Fasano of Ashtabula, and John Joseph Bernardo of Jefferson; seven grandchildren, Peter "Kafer", Michael, and Matthew Bernardo, Vincent Joseph (Monica) Fasano, Catherina Fasano (Chris) Chmielewski, John Michael (Ann) Bernardo, and Angeline (Jeff) Gowdy; nine great-grandchildren, Sophia Joanne Bernardo, Vincent J. Fasano Jr., Daniel Amico and Isabella Mae Fasano, Makala, Gianna, and John Bernardo, and Jeffrey and Olivia Madeline Gowdy; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Peter Bernardo; two sisters, Mary Providence Lamb and Asunta "Sadie" Mackey; two brothers, Sam and John Grippe; and her parents.
Calling Hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017, at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula. A Calling Hour will be held on Saturday at St. Joseph Church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at 11 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, with the Rev. Fr. Raymond Thomas celebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Ashtabula.
Memorial Masses in memory of our mother may be given to the Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Joseph Church, 3312 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
