Dr. Thomas C. Hughes, age 67, of Ashtabula, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the Jefferson Health Care Facility.
He was born June 27, 1949, and adopted by Clifford and Mildred Hughes of Akron, Ohio.
At the age of 17, he opened his own business, Triple A Ambulance Service, and served as an apprentice at Potti Funeral Home. After graduating Ashtabula Harbor High School, Tom attended Kent State University. After college, he followed the footsteps of his father serving a short tour in the United States Navy. He also served as a police officer, firefighter, coroner, funeral director and lastly as a college professor.
Tom continues his education in his free time obtaining his Doctorate of Technical Science degree and Professorship at the University of Canterbury. In college, he excelled in basketball, football, and golf; his talents seemed to have no end. He was sought out by the Indianapolis Colts to play professional football and nearly joined the Senior PGA Tour.
He was diagnosed with aggressive Multiple Sclerosis in 1996. Tom courageously fought his illness but eventually fell to his illness.
More than anything, Tom will be remembered as "Dad" and "Grampa". Tom loved his children and adored his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tom is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children, Tom Kelly, Sabrina (Aaron) Shields, Christopher (Elizabeth) Hughes, Michael Hughes, Michelle Burnett, and Julie Imbrogno; brother, Doug Hughes; grandchildren, Morgan and Nichola Kelly, Joseph and Jacob Gifford, Kennedy, Ian, Ryan, and Jayda Hughes, Arianna Morris and Appleena Imbrogno, and Jonathan, Mariah, and Nicklaus Otero; and five great-grandchildren including Brayden Smith and Nathan Otero.
Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Hughes; his parents; and brother, Jeff Hughes.
Friends and Family will gather on April 22nd, from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. at POTTI LAKESIDE FUNERAL HOME, 1329 Lake Ave. Ashtabula, Ohio
