Vital "Vi"'s Story

Vital "Vi" Dmitriev, age 73, died on October 1, 2017 at Heroes Harbor Hospice in Louis Stokes VA Medical Center. He was born on February 16, 1944, in Munich, Germany, to the late Walter and Mary Dmitriev. His parents marched from Ukraine to Germany where they resided for 3 years and then went to Belgium for 9 years before coming to the United States. Vi graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1962.
He joined the Army from 1962 to 1965 and served in Korea Artillery for 1 year and in 6th Special Forces for the remainder of his service. After he was honorably discharged, he attended Mahoning Vocational School and received certification in drafting. He worked as a draftsman doing mechanical and structural design to meet the needs of area companies, including Reliance Electric, Morton Salt, and Eltech.
In 1984, Vi purchased Bleckard's on E. Washington St. in Painesville and renamed it The Music Factory where he worked part time until 1990 when he went full time. In October 2002 he relocated the store to 1493 Mentor Ave., in Painesville Commons.
Vi played in local bands at various clubs, including Knightmen, Viewpoint and Elvis Ladd at The Wine Press, Country Inn in Chardon, Green Lantern, and private parties and weddings. He also DJ'd too.
On February 28, 2008 Vi's second life began when his son, Steve donated a kidney for which he is forever grateful.
Survivors are his wife, Susan (Monthie) Downing Dmitriev, whom he married on May 12, 2001; children, Steven (Jackie) Dmitriev of Perry, Lisa, Erin, and Adam; 8 grandchildren; his wife's children; Kim (Arnold) Savilla of W.Va; Michael (Jennifer) Downing of Toledo, Katy (Randy) Hedrick of Painesville Twp, and Sean Downing; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brothers, Valentin (Sandra) of TN, Valerian (Karen) of FL; sister-in-law, Sue Dmitriev of WA; nieces, nephews, and several cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Victor.
He was a member of NAMM and enjoyed going to music shows in Nashville and Anaheim; he enjoyed growing jade plants and giving them to family and friends; and was an all around "Honey, Fix-it" man who remodeled his own home.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 2-6PM at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville, Ohio 44077, with a memorial service at 6:00PM with military honors. Casual dress is requested. All musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and help celebrate Vi's life with music.
