William's Story

William J. "Gabby" Laurila Sr., age 89, of Austinburg, passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Saybrook Landing Nursing Home
Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, on August 15, 1927, he was the son of John H. and Anna (Antila) Laurila. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Laurel was a Welder in the Steel Industry: Carlson Steel, BLG Boilerworks, and A Lewis Steel.
He was a life long member of Mason Harbor Lodge and in 1962 was the youngest past Master of the Harbor Blue Lodge, and continued to be an active member of El Kadir Grotto and Western Reserve Chapter 8, recently celebrating 65 years as a Mason, Life Member N.R.A., and Amboy Rifle Club.
He enjoyed golfing, bowling, trapping, fishing, enjoyed watching the Cavs and Browns.
Survivors include his sons, Tim (Lisa) Laurila of Silver Spring, Md., and Terry (Michael Wheeler) Laurila of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren, Jonamarie and Stephanie Laurila; and sister, Elvira Diffenbacher of Ashtabula.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne (Kitchin), whom he married in 1956; sons, William John "Billy" Laurila Jr. and John (Martha) Laurila; brother, Harold Laurila; his parents; and numerous golf and bowling buddies.
Calling Hours are 5-7 p.m., Thursday, April 27, 2017, at WALKER FUNERAL HOME, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, Ohio, with a Masonic Service following.
Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, April 28th, at Saybrook Cemetery, Rt. 20 and Rt. 45, with the Rev. Jeff Stoll officiating. Military Honors by Geneva V.F.W. Post #6846.
