Alfred Mackey (Al) Obituary

Arlington, VA - Alfred Mackey, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully on December 14, 2025, surrounded by his family. Al is survived, and greatly missed, by his children Lauren and Cam, and his grandchildren Lyra, Elliot, Wylie and Catherine.

Al was born on October 2, 1941 in Dorset, Ohio to William and Helmi Mackey. He grew up on a dairy farm, and spent the majority of his life in Northeastern Ohio, calling Ashtabula home for nearly 75 years. After college and law school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, serving in the prestigious JAG corps. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Ashtabula where he set up his own private legal practice and became an active member of the community.

As County Commissioner, he played a pivotal role in the 1985 creation of the Ohio State University Ashtabula Agricultural Research Station, which has helped turbocharge the Ashtabula County wine industry. As a Common Pleas Court Judge, he created a Drug Court in 2008, which took a progressive approach to fighting opioid addiction. Since the court's creation, several hundred people have successfully graduated and beaten that terrible addiction. As a justice of peace, Al had the great honor of performing wedding ceremonies for friends and loved ones, most notably the weddings of both of his children.

As a husband, he lovingly doted on Susanna for nearly 60 years. Few things gave him greater joy than sharing a quiet beach vacation or delicious meal with her. Later in life, he tried his best to not "share" her chocolate milkshake once he'd already finished his. Unfortunately, he was rarely successful.

As a father and grandfather, Al had a laugh that filled a room and a witty sense of humor that never faded, even at the end. He was always up for adventures with loved ones, whether it was hopping in the car during a blizzard to find the nearest ski slope, trekking the Sahara with Lauren, taking Cam to a Whitesnake concert, or asking his beloved grandchildren if they're planning on going to law school.

Al was a good man who led a good life, and he will be dearly missed.
