Ashtabula, OH - David R. Scafuro, 72, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, OH.

He was born on November 5, 1953 in Ashtabula , the son of Carmen and Hazel (Hoover) Scafuro and had been a lifelong Ashtabula resident.

A 1972 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he married the love of his life, Joanie Obhof, on June 18, 1977 and together they shared 48 wonderful years of love and adventures.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a conductor for Conrail and later CSX. He enjoyed his long career on the railroad much the same as his father did. David served as President of NARVRE for retired railroad employees and was a United Transportation Union Rep for many years.

David enjoyed biking, woodworking, photography, flying his drones, and music (especially classic rock, blues, and oldies). He also loved wildlife, the outdoors, and fishing. He will always be remembered as a very generous man, always helping someone in need. But more than anything, he loved his family and his favorite job of being the primary babysitter for his grandkids.

His survivors include his wife, Joanie Scafuro; two children Mark (Sara) Scafuro and Michelle (Dave) Ringler; grandchildren, Sophia, Audrey, and Luca; sisters, Delores Riley, Linda (Joe) Petros, Alice (Ed) Johnson; his brother, Jack (Margie) Scafuro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Lacy; and his parents.

Calling hours will be from 4-6PM with a service to follow at 6PM on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at the ZABACK-WILLIAMS-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 West Prospect Road, Ashtabula with Peachie Chatman serving as the Celebrant. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Plymouth Township at the convenience of the family.
