James K. Lind
James K. Lind, 75, passed away unexpectedly on September 14, 2019.
He was born on November 20, 1943, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, the son of James Russel and Dorothy (Hope) Lind and was an Ashtabula resident most of his life. A 1961 graduate of Ashtabula High School, he attended Kent State University. He also served his country proudly as a reservist in the Army National Guard. Many of his oldest and dearest friends knew him affectionately as "Bruiser."
Prior to his retirement, he was an Iron Worker for Local #17, Cleveland, a trade he took full advantage of, enabling him to work around the country and overseas including two stints in Guinea, West Africa. Later he served as Vice President of AE Steel Erectors here in Ashtabula, Ohio.
Jim worked hard, however, he also enjoyed his recreation. He loved sailing and raced boats for years out of Ashtabula Yacht Club. He would often volunteer to work with the Sea Scouts Explorer Group to help younger sailors appreciate the art of seamanship. A particular point of pride for Jim was the opportunity to make a transatlantic trip with fellow Ashtabulan Bill Sutherland aboard Tenacious, a 61-foot racing yacht owned (at the time) by news mogul Ted Turner in 1979. As a part of the crew, he aided in delivering the vessel from the U.S. to England to take part in an ocean race. He also loved golfing, playing cards (cribbage), and the daily crossword. Jim was a lifelong fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns.
Always dedicated to his community, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Ashtabula Marine Museum and served on the Board of Goodwill Industries. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #208.
He is survived by his proud and loving children, Jake Lind of Baltimore, MD, Michael (Kara) Lind of Madison, and Ericka Severino of Ashtabula; three grandchildren, Ava Severino, Eliette Lind, and Odin Lind; one sister, Jennifer Lautanen of Ashtabula; brother, Thomas R. Lind of Ashtabula; his first cousin, Mary Beth Quinn who was like a sister; his best friend since childhood, Rick Richardson; several nieces and nephews; and Kaye Lind, the mother of his children.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David Lind; a sister, Linda Howe; and his parents.
Calling hours will be held from 5-7PM on Thursday, September 19, 2019, at the Zaback-Williams-Ducro Funeral Home, 500 W. Prospect Rd., Ashtabula. The Ashtabula Elks #208 will conduct their memorial service at 7 PM and a service honoring his life will follow officiated by lifelong friend Rev. Susan Hewins.
