Audubon, PA - John William Hoyt passed from this life on December 5, 2025, at Reading Hospital, after a short battle with leukemia.
He was born on July 3, 1945, in Ashtabula, OH, to John Francis and Orletta (Loyd) Hoyt. He was a 1963 graduate of Ashtabula High School and was inducted into the AHS Alumni Hall of Fame in 2018.
On September 5, 1964, in Ashtabula, he married Adaire L. "Dee" Hoyt, with whom he shared an enduring love and sixty years of marriage while raising three children. John was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati Medical School and did his anesthesiology residency at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia, and his critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He achieved the rank of Lt. Commander and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1978.
John was a dedicated, driven physician who tirelessly transformed the practice of critical care medicine. In 1983, he became Medical Director of the Medical/Surgical ICU at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he taught fellows as a Clinical Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989, he was named a Fellow by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, elected their President in 1996, and named a Master of Critical Care Medicine in 2014. Throughout his career, he advocated for improved patient care and outcomes, including testifying before Congress, developing an ICU database (Project Impact) to track and describe patient care, writing countless peer-edited journal articles, and serving as co-editor of the seminal textbook, Critical Care Practice (1991). He and Dee together built their businesses, Pittsburgh Critical Care Associates, which managed intensive care units throughout the country and Physician Technologies, which is a medical billing company. He also served proudly on the Board of Trustees of his undergraduate alma mater, Baldwin-Wallace University. He was a long-time member of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church in Fox Chapel, PA, and most recently worshipped with First Presbyterian Church in Pottstown, PA.
John enjoyed the Pittsburgh Symphony, summers at the Chautauqua Institution, and an excellent meal - all of which paled in comparison to the love he had for his family. In addition to Dee, he is survived by his three children, J. Alexander "Alex" Hoyt (Kerri), Julie E. Cockrell (Tom), and Lauren M. Hoyt (Nora), as well as his brother Kenneth L. Hoyt (Marcia). He took immense pride in being "Papoo" to his six grandchildren: John Samuel "Sam" Hoyt, Reid Stanley Cockrell, Benjamin Francis Hoyt, Adeline Hutchinson Cockrell, Jacob Andrew "Jack" Hoyt, and Harrison "Hank" Hoyt Landon. The family is grateful that he was able to spend time with his beloved family in the last days of his life. We will all miss his incredible intellect and mischievous sense of humor. Professionally and personally, John lived out Matthew 25:36, 40: "I was sick and you visited me... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Reading Hospital Foundation in appreciation for the compassionate care they provided.
