Leah Shapiro Coblitz Obituary

Ashtabula, Ohio - ASHTABULA - Leah Shapiro Coblitz, 102, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2025 at her home.

The daughter of Monas and Riva (Heifetz) Shapiro, she was born in Riga, Latvia on February 19, 1923.

On July 15, 1944, she married Sanford "Sandy" Coblitz and together they celebrated fifty-three years of love, laughter and companionship.

The Coblitz family moved to the Ashtabula area in 1946 and quickly became an integral part of the Ashtabula Community.

In later years, Leah would spend the spring and summer months in Ashtabula and winter months in Boca Raton, Florida. She enjoyed sharing her talents with both communities.

Leah remained true to her Jewish faith and heritage. She was a lifetime member of B'Nai Brith Women (Past President) and Hadassah and was a member of the Jewish Federation of Boca Raton as well as a member of Tifereth Israel Congregation of Ashtabula.

She was a member of the Fortnightly Book Club, Ashtabula where she was a spirited participant in many book reviews. A life-member of the Cleveland Art Museum and member of the Ashtabula Arts Center, Leah also enjoyed attending events at the Ashtabula Arts Center as well as supporting the Center's role in the community. While residing in Florida, she was a member of the Boca West Chorus since 1997, the Boca West Cancer Research Unit, the South Palm Beach Jewish Federation, Lion of Judah Endowment, and Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Leah will be remembered for her independence and strength, her love of friends and family, and deep belief in her faith.

She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons: Mark (Iris) of Wayne, Pennsylvania, David (Elaine Unell) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Rick (Linda) of Ashtabula; seven grandchildren: Drew, Brian (Lauren), Evan (Sophie), and Aaron Coblitz, Valerie (Jake) Harchalk, and Joe (Jennifer) and Scott (Stephanie) Coblitz; ten great-grandchildren: Clara, Eryn, Johnny, Anna, Grace, Levi, Ben, Adam, Elyse and Genevieve; two sisters: Harriet Goodman of Ashtabula and Beverly Perlman of New Jersey; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sanford 'Sandy" Coblitz on August 10, 1997; her parents and her brother, Jack Shapiro.

Calling hours will be from 11:00AM - 1:00PM with a service to follow at 1:00PM on Friday, April 11, 2025 at the Ducro Funeral Home, 4524 Elm Avenue, Ashtabula. Dr. Jeffrey Brodsky of Tifereth Israel Congregation will officiate. Burial will be in Ridgeview Cemetery, Tifereth Israel Section.
