Marian B. Kent, age 95, of Conneaut passed away on March 9, 2025, at the Villa at the Lake. Born in Allentown, PA, she was the daughter of Alexander and Harriet (Burr) Troxell. In 1940, Marian and her mother moved to Pawling, NY and graduated from Pawling High School in 1947. With her minister's help, she got a scholarship to Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH and in 1951 graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in religion. After college, she moved to Toledo, OH to work as a counselor at the Lucille Cummings Home (for delinquent girls). Marian went on to be a group worker at the International Institute of Toledo, where she worked with various nationality groups and foreign-born associated with the Institute. Her favorite was the folk-dance group. They learned dances from many countries, then demonstrated them in costumes as a program for various civic clubs. It was at this time that Marian met Dr. Frederick Kent "Doc". They were married on November 1, 1953. Doc worked for the Toledo Dental Dispensary and the following year, started a practice in Oak Harbor, OH. In 1955, he bought Dr. Bell's practice in Conneaut, OH, where they eventually settled and raised 6 children together. In 1967, Marian went back to college part-time and received her teaching certification in education from Kent State University, Ashtabula campus. She taught Kindergarten for a year at Kingsville Elementary School and substituted after that for the Conneaut school system. In 1975, Marian became church secretary for First United Methodist Church, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She also volunteered as a poll worker for 35 years.
Marian really enjoyed all the activities of Doc's barbershop quartet, "The Sta-Laters", and her love for 4-part barbershop harmony grew. She became a charter member of the Covered Bridge Chapter of Sweet Adelines and sang with them for 25 years. Apart from Sweet Adelines, church activities took up most of her extra time. Marian was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She taught Sunday School, served on the Administrative Board, the Altar Guild, and the Outreach Committee, was past secretary of the United Methodist Women, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, and was past chairperson of the Mission Committee. Marian was most passionate about the mission work of the church and participated in mission trips to the Urban Mission in Steubenville, OH, specifically the J.O.S.H.U.A. Program, a work missions project established for youth and adult groups from various parts of the country who help make a difference in the living conditions of low income residents of the Ohio Valley.
Marian traveled to many places over the years, including Canada, The Bahamas, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, U.S.S.R., the Oberammergau Passion Play and the Holy Land, to name a few. She and Doc were members of the Conneaut Boat Club and spent countless summers aboard one of their many cabin cruisers, traveling the Great Lakes with friends and family.
In 2005, Marian moved to Copeland Oaks senior retirement living community in Sebring, OH, where she volunteered in the library, thrift shop, Caring Friendship program, Outreach Committee, played in chime choir, played bridge and euchre. She joined Sebring United Methodist Church where she sang in choir, served on the Mission Committee and was a member of United Methodist Women.
Eventually, she returned to Conneaut to be close to family and live out her remaining years.
She enjoyed folk dancing, boating, music, concerts, theater, traveling, crocheting, playing cards, reading, participating in numerous church activities, watching NASCAR and the Cleveland Browns.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Frederick Kent in 1999, her parents, half-sister Katherine Schneck, many aunts, uncles, and numerous dear friends.
Marian is survived by her 6 children: Amy (Skip) Dean of Copan, OK, Frederick Kent Jr. (Barbara) of Perry, GA, David Kent of Conneaut, OH, Lorrie DeNunzio (Joseph) of Conneaut, OH, Donald Kent (Rebecca) of Rochester, NY and Jennifer DeMarco (Fred) of Conneaut, OH, her grandchildren: Jeffrey Dean (Kelle), Jason Dean (Carissa), Kristen Durant (Ray), Sean Kent, Melissa Stevens (Jason), Jillian Gugino (Tom) and Stephen Kent (Andrea), and her great-grandchildren: Tyler, Tony, Blaise, Taly, Aubree, Olivia, Noah, Eden, Sarah, Julia and Liliana.
Marian's family especially wants to thank the Villa at the Lake for the compassionate and loving care they provided over the past few years, and Hospice of the Western Reserve.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, March 14, 2025 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM, Thursday, March 13, 2025 at the funeral home.
