Martin Lee Fleger (Marty) Obituary

Martin "Marty" Lee Fleger went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday November 13th, 2024. Marty was born in Geneva Ohio on the 17th of May, 1942 to Margaret and Percy Fleger. He attended Plymouth elementary then to Ashtabula High school. His parents moved to the farm at 5259 Hadlock Road in Plymouth Township in March of 1955, where he lived until moving to warmer climates in Florida in 2008. He graduated from Ashtabula High school on June 10th 1960 then went on to the Culinary Institute of American in 1963. He graduated in the top ten percent of his class in 1965. He worked in various restaurants and bakeries until landing his job with the Interlake Steamship Company, where he stayed for 35 years.

In his first nine years with the company he was second cook, then promoted to head chef; a position he held for twenty five years. His culinary skills were unmatched. Everyone loved Marty's cooking. He met and fell in love with Linda Brockway Kesatie and her son Mathew in 1988 and they married on March 4th, 1989. He became a new father at the age of 48 with the birth of his second son John. Marty had a full family with his wife Linda, who he remained married to for 35 years. Marty and Linda gave their sons a wonderful childhood in the country; much the same way he grew up. His love for sailing was as strong as his love for his friends and family. No one has every spoken a bad word about Marty, only words of what a kind, gentle and caring person he was.

He retired from sailing in 2004 to pursue his true passion, gardening. He truly loved gardening. In his retirement he grew many 2 acre gardens with corn, green beans, peppers and potatoes. He spent many hours outside in the warm sunshine with a hoe tending to his crop. This peace brought him true happiness. Marty and his wife moved to Florida full time in 2008. They were joined by their friends the Fords and his brother Karl FLeger. The two families and Karl would attend the strawberry festival, go out to dinner and play cards; more specifically pinochle. Without being able to garden in Florida, his passion shifted to making percussion cap firearms with his brother. Together they produced many works of art that were fully functional firearms under the name Fleger Gun Works.

Marty was the perfect example of how to live a full life. Not only did he experience a fulfilling career and hobbies that brought him peace but also the joy of becoming a grandfather to his son's children. He was affectionately known as "Grandpa Grumpy"; though the children never saw him in a bad mood. They enjoyed his pasta dinners, mashed potatoes and Linda's bake goods the most. Marty passed away in his Florida home holding his sons and wife's hand. He will be eternally missed and loved.

He is proceeded in death by his parents Percy and Margaret Fleger. Survived by the following: wife Linda Fleger, two sons Mathew Kesatie (Amber Kesatie) and John Fleger (Kayla Fleger), grandchildren Arianna Kesatie, Aden Kesatie, Emmett Fleger, Emelia Fleger and his brother Karl Fleger.
